7+ Headphone Options For Autistic Children With Sensory Sensitivity

As you support your autistic child, we recognize that sensitivity to loud noises is common. This heightened sensitivity can lead to discomfort, anxiety, and even meltdowns in environments that are filled with overwhelming sounds. Yet, one of the most rewarding experiences is finding tools that genuinely aid our children's growth. With technological advancements and better accessibility, we've put together a list of noise-canceling headphones that might benefit your child.

What are noise-canceling headphones?

Modern headphones, unlike those from the 90s, offer more features to enhance the user experience. One such feature is the ability to enclose the ear to virtually eliminate external noise, effectively canceling it out.

The benefits of noise-canceling headphones

Many have found that integrating these headphones into your child's daily routine, whether at home, in school, or during outings, you can help them feel more secure and focused, enabling them to participate in activities that they might otherwise find overwhelming. Many children with developmental differences who have sensory sensitivity to sound need a way to lessen, if not eliminate, the noise. Being over-stimulated by noise can lead to triggers for the child. Having headphones that can ease the stimulus can aid in calming the child and reducing stress when it coincides with your child's specific needs. The right product should provide effective sound reduction while remaining comfortable and safe for daily use. Features such as good sound quality, adjustable volume, and a snug fit can make a big difference.

In addition to providing immediate relief from disruptive sounds, using noise-canceling headphones can also encourage your child to explore new interests, such as listening to calming music or engaging with educational audio content. This can foster a sense of independence and empowerment, as they learn to manage their sensory experiences more effectively.

ANC vs. PNI

Before you begin adding headphones to your cart, first understand what type of noise block technology you need in the headphones you are considering.

Active noise-canceling (ANC) headphones cancel out ambient noise by creating equal but opposite noise. These headphones involve technology that listens for sound and produces soundwaves to oppose or cancel the sound as if to drown the noise into a softer, lower frequency sounding noise.

Whereas, the more common is passive noise isolation (PNI) headphones that mold to your ears to block out ambient noise creating closer to a silent reduction of noise. As a result, you wouldn't, for example, need to play your music loud since all other noise has been silenced. This is accomplished by the ear being physically covered to help muffle/block the sound that's outside of the headphone.

Nonetheless, a note of caution, using noise-reduction headphones can make social interactions more challenging. Others may wrongly assume they're not interested in or open to conversation simply because they're wearing headphones. While these headphones are excellent for reducing stress caused by loud sounds, they also block out voices, important directions, and even potential dangers.

Here's our list

Ultimately, investing in quality noise-canceling headphones is not just about comfort; it's about enhancing your child's overall quality of life. By equipping them with the right tools, you open up a world of possibilities for growth, learning, and joyful experiences. We hope that this list of recommended headphones will serve as a valuable resource for you and your child as you embark on this journey together.

Things to consider

Other than price and technology, there are other things to keep in mind for consideration when selecting which headphones to move forward with if you chose. Cordless or no cords, headphones vs earbuds, battery life, quality, compatibility, ratings, performance, over the ear vs on the ear vs in the ear, comfort, and so forth. So do you research before purchasing.
